God's Power in the Bible

Updated: 2 days ago

Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee

There is a world of mystery in the simple statement, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 NIV). He spoke everything into existence demonstrating His incomprehensible power.

People see God’s eternal power and divine nature in His creation (Romans 1:20), but the Bible reveals much more.

He is all-powerful (Job 36:22). He has all wisdom and power (Daniel 2:20) and is mighty in power and understanding (Job 36:5). Nobody can stand against Him (2 Chronicles 20:6).  Power belongs to Him forever (Psalm 62:11, Revelation 7:12).

We can’t imagine the greatness of His power (Job 37:5). Jesus said that not knowing that power or the Scriptures is a mistake (Matthew 22:29). That error is a major reason for the world’s turmoil.

God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt with great power (Exodus 32:11), foreshadowing freeing His people from the power of slavery to sin, the law, and the devil (Romans 6:10, 11, 22; Romans 7:4; Hebrews 2:14).

God accomplishes His will through Jesus Christ and His church. Jesus healing demon-possessed people was a majestic display of God’s power in a human (Luke 9:43, Luke 11:20), although He was also fully God.

God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and power (Acts 10:38) and endorsed Him through His powerful miracles, wonders, and signs (Acts 2:22). He is the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), sustaining everything by the mighty power of his command (Hebrews 1:3).

By the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for humanity’s sins (Hebrews 9:14), was raised from the dead (Romans 1:4), and now lives.

That power is available for Jesus’ followers. God bestows it (Psalm 68:35) so they can bless others. The Apostle Peter healed a man by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene (Acts 4:10).

God gave the Apostle Paul the power to perform unusual miracles (Acts 19:11) and bring the Gentiles to God (Romans 15:19). Non-apostles can experience it too.

It begins with the new birth into God’s Kingdom by trusting the gospel, the mighty power of God that raised Jesus from the dead (Colossians 2:12). This Good News saves everyone who believes (Romans 1:16) and gives the spiritually dead life through trust in His word and the power of His name (Ephesians 2:1, John 20:31).

That word is alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). God plants it in hearts with the power to save souls (James 1:21).

The Kingdom of God is about living by God’s almighty power (1 Corinthians 4:20) that raised Jesus from the dead and seated him at the place of honor at God’s right hand (Ephesians 1:19).

That mighty power equips his servants (Ephesians 3:7) and makes them strong in the Lord (Ephesians 6:10). They overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).

God’s fullness of life and power makes believers complete (Ephesians 3:19) with a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7) and everything they need to live a godly life (2 Timothy 3:5, 2 Peter 1:3), protecting them until they receive their salvation to be revealed on the last day (1 Peter 1:5).

God gives believers the desire and power to do what pleases Him (Philippians 2:13) to accomplish all the good things their faith prompts them to do (2 Thessalonians 1:11).

The Spirit’s power grants spiritual abilities to believers (1 Corinthians 12:10, 14:2) to build the church. Because of that power within them, God can accomplish infinitely more through them than they ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). God’s will won’t lead you where his grace and power can’t keep you!
